The Turquoise Heart of the Geopark: Kayaking & Wild Swimming in the Negratín Reservoir
Discover Granada's spectacular "inland sea," a paradise for water sports, relaxation, and incredible views.
Driving through the semi-arid landscapes of the Altiplano, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the middle of a desert. Then you turn a corner, and an unbelievable sight unfolds: a vast expanse of shimmering turquoise water flanked by dramatic red cliffs. This is the Embalse del Negratín — the stunning inland sea of Granada.
The Best Ways to Enjoy the Water
Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding — glide silently across the calm, clear water, navigating hidden coves and getting up close to the fascinating geological formations of the shoreline. Rentals are available from several spots along the shore in summer, particularly near Cuevas del Campo.
Wild Swimming & Sunbathing — the water is clean, deep and refreshing. The most popular and accessible spot is Playa de Freila, a man-made beach with soft sand and calm, shallow entry points perfect for families, complete with beachside chiringuitos serving cold drinks and fresh fish.
Planning Your Day Trip
- Best time to go: May through September for swimming and water sports.
- Bring sunscreen, swimwear, a hat, and water shoes for the stonier stretches of shoreline.
- Access points near Freila, Cuevas del Campo and Zújar.
After a fantastic day on the water, you can be back at your holiday home in under an hour, ready to fire up the BBQ and relive the day’s adventures.
Slow Down: Massage & Yoga
Not every day needs an itinerary. On request, we can arrange an in-house massage or a private yoga session on your terrace or patio — ask us on WhatsApp a day or two ahead and we’ll organise it for your stay.
